Managing VM and Usage

You can manage the VM’s during the workshop, stop the VM’s after each day and start it back up the next day, this will optimize the azure cost.

  1. You can manage VM usage and can stop/start the VM by navigating to the Control Panel of the ODL as shown:

  1. You can start or stop all the Virtual machines of a particular ODL at once by clicking on the Start VM/ Stop VM button.

  1. If you want to stop all the Virtual Machines for a particular ODL at one go, you can do so by clicking on the Stop VM button.

  1. If you want to start all the Virtual Machines for a particular ODL at one go, you can do so by clicking on the Start VM button.

  1. Virtual Machine Usage: You can find the VM usage hours by clicking on VM usage option. This option helps you to know the usage of the VM per learner.

VM usage option is available under each and every On Demand Lab Control Panel. So, for which lab you want to check VM usage you have to navigate in respective of On Demand Lab (ODL).

After selecting VM usage, select SYNC WITH CLOUD for real-time synchronisation of VM consumption information. There will be a delay of 10-15 minutes. Uptime Limit and Uptime can be found here. So, Uptime Limit displays the overall VM Uptime Limit duration of the On Demand Lab, and Uptime displays the amount of time the VM was running, as well as the cost.

VM deallocated (1) [Exhausted anytime VM Uptime Limit is crossed]: This means that whatever VM Uptime Limits you specified at the time of On Demand Lab creation will be crossed, and your VM will be deallocated automatically. User won't be able to start the VMs , users will need to reach out to Admins / Instructors if they need to extend the uptime limit.

VM deallocated (2): This means that we can deallocate a virtual machine for a specific user instead of the all.

VM running (3): This indicates that the virtual machine is running normally and that the VM Uptime Limit has not yet been exceeded. The VM Uptime Limit has been specified by the instructor in this case. Example:The VM's uptime limit is 40 hours, yet the user has only used it for 32.47 hours. As a result, whenever the time limit reaches 40 hours, it will be automatically deallocated.

So, if the Instructor/Admin wants to monitor the user's uptime limit, they may go to the control panel and look under VM Usage. After that, they may see what VM Uptime Limit we have set, as well as how much time is left for a specific user.

If Admin/Instructor need to extend the VM uptime limit for a specific user then you can navigate Users page.

Environment duration:

Every Lab Environment has a specified duration on them, this duration indicates the total time the environment will remain active. Every environment will get auto-deleted after the duration expires. E.g, Lab environment 1 duration is 96 Hours since it will be used for all 4 days to complete various lab modules.
