Article summary

Overview

Quota planning is crucial for managing cloud resources efficiently and ensuring that your CloudLabs VM Labs environments operates smoothly. By planning quotas, you can:

  • Prevent Resource Quota Exhaustion: Ensure that you have enough resource quota available to meet your needs without hitting quota limits.

  • Improve Availability: Maintain availability by ensuring that resource quota is available when needed, avoiding bottlenecks.

By the end of this documentation, you should be able to:

  • Plan and manage quotas for your CloudLabs VM Labs.

Note:

You can reach out to CloudLabs Support to increase the quota if you are using a CloudLabs Managed Subscription. However, if you have opted for Bring Your Own Subscription (BYOS), you will need to contact your admin team or the concerned person to raise the quota.

How to Plan Quota

To effectively plan your quota, follow these steps:

Quota Information and Support:

  • You can refer to this document to understand the default quota present for the CloudLabs provided subscription (Quotas.xlsx).

  • If you want to increase the quota for any VM SKU after planning the quota, you can reach out to CloudLabs support.

Decide the number of VMs to be deployed and choose the VM SKU:

  • Determine the total number of VMs you plan to deploy

  • Select the desired VM SKU based on your workload and performance requirements.

Calculate number of Quota required:

  • If you plan to use the VM SKU Standard_D4s_v4, which has 4 vCPUs per VM.

  • Suppose you have a total of 50 vCPUs available and you want to deploy 25 VMs in East US.

  • Formula:

Total vCPU quota required = Number of VMs × Number of vCPUs per VM

  • Calculation:

    • Total vCPU quota required = 25 VMs × 4 vCPUs per VM = 100 vCPUs

  • The number of quotas you need to request is calculated as follows:

    • Quota needed = Total vCPU quota required − Number of vCPUs already available

  • Calculation:

    • Quota needed = 100 vCPUs − 50 vCPUs already available = 50 vCPUs

  • You can request the CloudLabs Support team (labs-support@spektrasystems.com) to add 50 vCPUs in East US region to the existing quota.

Note:

Consider requesting additional quotas as a buffer. For example, if you plan to deploy 25 VMs, request a quota that includes extra vCPUs beyond your planned requirement. This precaution ensures you can deploy additional VMs if any issues arise, providing flexibility and preventing potential disruptions. Please be aware that increasing the quota may take up to 24hours. Kindly plan the quota 2 – 3 days in advance.

Quota Information and Support:

By following these steps, you can effectively plan and manage your Azure Subscription quotas, ensuring you have the necessary quotas to support your activities while maintaining control over availability of deployable VMs.

Next Steps

Now that you have learned about quota planning, you can proceed with the following actions:

  • You can now start creating labs using these VM SKUs. For detailed steps, refer to the Create Labs article.
